Question of the Day

How should we recruit for band and strings next year?  Caroling through the halls?  An instrument petting zoo and concert with you as the teachers?  Tell me in the comments!

Reflection Time!

PRACTICE! One of your least favorite topics in the entire world.  Why do we practice? Why is it important?  What happens when you do not practice and how does it affect the entire ensemble?  Name at least three practice techniques I have taught you this school year (and then go use them!).  Respond in the comments with your answer.

Listen to the following three, very different performances.  Pay close attention to your specific instrument that you play in band. Video 1: A clip from Mahler's 6th Symphony Video 2: Benny Goodman and his Orchestra, "Let's Dance", and "Don't be That Way" Video 3: Jenkins' "American Overture for Band" After listening, respond to the following questions.  Plan to write at least 3 or more sentences per question, using your musical vocabulary.  1.   What role did your instrument play in each of these ensembles?  Was it a featured instrument or only part of the group as a whole?  How did your instrument play differently in each setting shown above?  If it did not play a role in one of the ensembles, why not? (saxophones!)  2. Which group's piece did you prefer more?  Why? 3. Which group could you most see yourself playing in in the future?  Why?
